Welcome to the new Miss Baseball site! Like the new site? I love the pink. I am going to work on a new logo, something with pink and sparkles.  I hope you like the site and let me know what you think. I have been working hard to get my geek on with Cleat Geeks. Check me out as I make predictions on who will win the American League West.

While working on my articles I kept running into a problem, I have talked about this before baseball is horrible about explaining why they do the things they do. My problem next to a ballplayers name was his batting avg, I would see two other sets of numbers. I would ask around , what are these other numbers? Now sure I could guess and make assumptions but no one ( I know lots of baseball loving people) knew for SURE what the number were. Today for Fun Fact Friday I am going to tell you what these numbers are.

Here is an example from a story about Alex Gordon

“Gordon hit .271/.377/.432”

What you are seeing here is

Player’s name,  Batting Avg/ OBP/SLG

What is OBP? According to BaseballReference.com

On Base Percentage (aka OBP, On Base Average, OBA) is a measure of how often a batter reaches base. It is approximately equal to Times on Base/Plate appearances.

The full formula is OBP = (Hits + Walks + Hit by Pitch) / (At Bats + Walks + Hit by Pitch + Sacrifice Flies). Batters are not credited with reaching base on an error or fielder’s choice, and they are not charged with an opportunity if they make a sacrifice bunt.

What is SLG Slugging Percentage again from Baseballreference.com

Slugging percentage (abbreviated SLG and also called Slugging average) is the number of total bases divided by the number of at bats.

Its formula is ([Singles] + [Doubles x 2] + [Triples x 3] + [Home Runs x 4])/[At Bats]

At bats are different than plate appearances.

An equivalent formula is ([Hits] + [Doubles] + [Triples x 2] + [Home Runs x 3])/At Bats

This formula is not as intuitive, but is often more convenient, as singles are often not given (although they could easily be deduced). Singles can be figured fom the following equation because they are simply hits that are not for extra bases: (Hits – [Doubles + Triples + Home Runs])

That’s it for now, but don’t worry more will be coming soon. In the meantime, be sure to catch my alter ego on CleatGeeks.

TBT: Miss Baseball’s Anniversary

Standard

Yesterday was Miss Baseball’s one-year anniversary. For those of you who don’t know me, I am a mom with two wonderful boys who live with autism. When you live with someone with autism, it is very easy to lose yourself, and I did. I was so busy being a mom, nurse, occupational therapist, speech therapist and special needs teacher to my boys, I forgot about me. I am not ashamed to say I became very depressed. I even went to therapy. I found a great therapist who didn’t use a pad to solve the problems but a simple question. What do you like to do? Stop being everything to everyone else and start being something for you. I rediscovered my passion for writing, and then baseball came back into my life. Then I combined my two loves, writing and baseball, and Miss Baseball was born.

What a wild ride this has been. I went from not knowing how Twitter works to having almost 800 followers. My Facebook page has some of my most wonderful followers. Thank you to all my fans. Your support means a great deal to me. I would also like to thank all my baseball players who have been supportive of me.

When I hurt my knee, Derek Holland gave me some wonderful words of encouragement.

//platform.twitter.com/widgets.jsEncouragement and positivity are important in recovery. Having Derek Holland’s words really made all the long hours of physical therapy worth it. I am all better and very grateful for the kind words.

When you ask your favorite player to sign a photo you have saved for years

Thank you again Dean Palmer for my autographed photo. When I wrote about Dean Palmer, I never thought in a million years he would respond. And I am amazed that he did.

On a more serious note, being a special needs parent, I am very particular to the charities that I support. While I don’t have any children with vascular birthmark, it frightens me to think that there is a child with one of these and it is either misdiagnosed or, worse, wrong advice is given. Please go to the Frank Catalanotto Foundation. Learn about this condition and all the good work that the foundation does. Also, to Frank Catalanotto, thank you for all the retweets of my articles. I wouldn’t be here without your support.

Last but certainly not least: Frank’s Ranger teammate Gabe Kapler, whose blog on KapLifestyle inspired me to write. I am very honored to be a part of the KapLifestyle family, and I would like to thank my “brothers” Matt Fields and Matt Paré.

I’ve got to do a quick shout-out to Cleat Geeks. Thank you for letting me be a part of your website. I really enjoy writing for you.

There are also some great people behind the scenes. I would like to thank Peter Summerville and Stephanie St. Amour. Thank you Stephanie for all the MANY times you have helped me on my blog.

Finally to Duncan Gilman, my friend since the seventh grade. He’s also my social media guru. He tells me do this and do that, and it would help my blog. I would do this and that, and each day my blog got more traffic, and I got more followers. He has celebrated every triumph and consoled every failure. There would not be Miss Baseball without Duncan. Thank you is not enough, but I am at a loss for words on my gratitude for all that you do for me.

Today, I thought I would end with my favorite article. It’s something that I truly believe: Baseball is life. No matter where you go or what you do, baseball is always there.

Baseball is life

IMG_1632 (2) (640x480)

I once read a Twitter post that said, “Baseball is not life, it is something you do. Life is something you live.”  A former ballplayer wrote that, and I can understand it. But I disagree  with it. Baseball IS life.

I am back from a much-needed vacation. I toured the city of Corpus Christi while avoiding Tropical Storm Bill. While my intention to go to a single game was washed out, I was treated to a double header the next day.  The USS Lexington is close by, and I took my boys to view the massive museum.  We toured the ship, and when my youngest was too tired to go on, we headed over to the mess deck to get a drink. We passed by this case full of baseball artifacts from 1933 and ’34 Navy baseball teams.

The vision of sailors, playing baseball — I think about them on the flight deck, with gloves on, tossing a ball around.  I have a vision of the stands in the ballpark and sailors watching and cheering the other sailors playing.

I think a little bit about the Twitter quote as I walk over to Whataburger Field. The Frisco RoughRiders and the Corpus Christi Hooks are Double A-ing my fun with a double header.  I get the last ticket behind home plate.

Manger for the Hooks Rodney Linares and acting as manger for the Rough Riders Jason Hart

Hooks Manager Rodney Linares and RoughRiders Acting Manager Jason Hart exchange lineups.

I am in my seat ready to watch some baseball, when my seat neighbor appears, a nice woman with her mom and a family friend. That’s right, I am sitting behind home plate and it is girls’ night out. My neighbor  is a huge Hooks fan, and the teasing commenced as I cheered for the RoughRiders. She and I talk about baseball throughout the game. She had her favorite players, ones she liked because they were kind to her child and others that were kind to the eyes.  Yes, I was giggling like a schoolgirl over some cute ballplayers; not going to apologize for that. Baseball pants are the world’s greatest invention.  Two games, 7 innings each, and the RoughRiders lost both, but there was some good ball in there, and I see a great team. I even have a favorite RoughRider. His name is Drew Robinson, and he wears 16 (Dean Palmer’s Ranger number) and he has a passion for the game.

The game is over, and I find the Frisco team bus. And while I couldn’t wait for the players to come out, I did meet more people.

I met the founders of Keeper of the Game Foundation, and the business card read, “Serving kids with special needs and disabilities while promoting servant leadership.”  As a mom of two children with autism, I am in awe. I am then handed a photo of my favorite player, Drew Robinson, and I hang it here near my desk.

After saying my goodbyes and getting in the car to head back to my hotel, I am just as relaxed after a double header as I was playing in the ocean.  Baseball is life — it keeps popping in my mind. Seeing baseball artifacts on the USS Lexington, going to a double header and being with other women who love baseball as much as I do, meeting people who understand how important baseball could be to special needs children. It just made me think, this is life.

Baseball is life. Baseball connects us. It moves us, it bonds us into a community. Baseball has all the markers of life: passion, love, hatred, obsession, lust. Baseball is the perfect euphemism for life. You may strike out more than you hit a home run, but you never stop swinging.

Fun Fact Friday: Bryce Harper got NOTHING!

Standard

Bryce Harper was at the plate four times yesterday there is video proof but you wouldn’t be able to tell from a scorecard. Harper had no official at bats last night when the Nationals played the Braves. He was walked four times and he even got 4 runs and an RBI. According to mlb.com

“Harper joins Ricky Henderson, Joe Morgan and Larry Doby on an exclusive list of players to go 0-for-0 with at least four runs and walks.”

Another fun fact, This is Harper’s 2nd time to do this, the last time that happened was in 1914.

Miss Baseball’s Fan Etiquette Guide

Standard

Today I was reading an article in the New York Post and I am very upset with how the fans behaved at the game. Being a lifelong Texas Ranger fan, I don’t even like the Yankees but poor Brett Gardner is hit by his own Yankee fan, throwing back a Blue Jay home run. Then Mark Teixeira is run over by a fan trying to get a foul ball that he missed. I mean come on did you not see the giant baseball player. I am shocked at these New York fans, I thought you knew better. Great! I am now defending Yankees, even the thought is making my skin crawl but even the evil empire needs people to behave. I think a top five rules to help out what I am hoping are just clueless fans.

Rule 1: Don’t ever hit one of your own players with a ball. Baseball is very hard and it hurts.
https://vine.co/v/ew0JY9HV5JH/embed/simple?audio=1

Rule 2: Don’t run over your own player to get a foul ball.

//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Rule 3: There are rules in MLB about autographs. Players can’t give autographs during the game. So don’t ask.

Rule 4: Be NICE! I can’t tell you how many times, people thought it was ok to say. “Oh you are in a slump right now. Maybe it’s time you learn to hit the ball.” I have seen grown men shove kids in the autograph area. Don’t do it. Be nice.

Rule 5: Be Positive. No booing your own players or team. When you see them, smile and tell them how you are cheering for them. Give them positive energy and that will turn into positive energy in the field.

Follow these rules and you can have happy ballplayers and happy fans; even if they are Yankees.

Q and A with Miss Baseball.

Standard

Right now I am glad I write and don’t do a video log. I normally have a high Minnie Mouse voice and now I sound like a old lady that smoked for 20 yrs. As I am too tired and sick to give you all a real post I thought I would answer questions that people at random ask me.

10421488_1534661360154673_7218859518163714089_n

Q: I thought you were a Royals fan; Why do you have a Ranger wreath on  your door?

I was a Royals fan because my favorite player last year played for them. If it came down in the playoff between the Royals and the Rangers I would hope the Rangers would beat down the Royals.

Q: You don’t have cable how can you watch all the baseball games?

The MLB app is wonderful, I buy for spring training and I can watch every game during the season other than the Rangers and Astros live.  I have to wait 90 mins after a game as ended to watch them because I am in their blackout zone.

Q: You post a bunch of stuff about the Dodgers, what’s up with that?

Thanks to being a part of the Kaplifestyle family, I started watching the Dodgers because of that. Now I watch the Dodgers because I am a fan.

Q: You write a blog about baseball! Why?

Why? Why not, I hope to be a place where women, chicks,
, whatever we call ourselves to talk about the game. There is so much sports news geared towards men, but women like baseball too. In my experience, I know more women who know more about the game than most men.  the exception to the rule is unless you played at a professional level.

Q: Do you talk to baseball players? I couldn’t do that I would be too scared.

Sure! on Twitter mostly. They are not scary, they are people. Some are really nice, some are jerks. Treat them like a person and they will treat you like one too.

Sad Fact Friday: Goodbye Tal’s Hill

Standard

Artist rendition of the new centerfield from the Houston Astros

This is the last year of Tal’s Hill, the 30 degree incline in centerfield at Minute Maid Park. Miss Baseball is a little sad that it is leaving.

Some facts about the hill:

With the removal of the hill the center field wall will be 409 and not 436

It will now be the 6th longest outfield

No injuries were ever cause by the hill

Now lets go to the tape

On Sunday afternoon, I open up my local paper to find an AP(Associated Press) story on the Texas Rangers beating the New York Yankees 15 to 4. The Rangers would later sweep the Yankees. (Woo Hoo! Who said that ? oh yeah its me!! GO RANGERS!!!!) The caption is so WRONG! I mean its so wrong I can’t not even comprehended how someone could make such a gross oversight. Here is the Miss Baseball correction.

In the picture from left to right: Delino DeShields, Jake Smolinski (not Elvis, they don’t even look close to alike) and Shin-Soo Choo.

Here is the player profile on Jake. Let’s get it right next time AP.

Rob Neyer answered my question

It was really awesome today to open up the link: http://www.foxsports.com/mlb/just-a-bit-outside/story/mailbag-bryce-harper-marcus-semien-dan-jennings-pete-rose-marlins-indians-athletics-052215

and see my name (correctly spelled too I might add) as one of the questions answered for your amusement my part of the JABO mailbag

Do you think the Marlins have set up Dan Jennings to fail?

– Hollie Hamilton

You mean on purpose? No, I don’€™t think so. I think this is one of those utterly personal decisions that so often defies any sort of logical analysis. Did it make sense for the Angels to sign Josh Hamilton for all those years and all that money? No, of course not. The Angels’€™ owner made what sure looks like an emotional decision. Does it make sense for the Angels to pay Hamilton to play for the Rangers for these next few seasons? No, probably not. The Angels’€™ owner made what sure looks like an emotional decision.

I think the Marlins’€™ owner wanted a new manager and wanted someone he really liked a lot, personally. And he looked around and hey, there’€™s Dan! But there’€™s not much reason to think Jennings will be there a year from now, and I’€™ll be mildly surprised if he’€™s still there in September. Seems like a good interim job for a minor-league manager or a trusty third-base coach.
